Build to print machining is the core of what we do

Most of the work in our Hillsborough, New Jersey machine shop begins with a customer’s drawing. Build to print machining is the core of what we do. Plant engineers, maintenance managers and purchasing agents send us an RFQ with the drawing package, and we deliver a finished, inspected part made to that print. We work from PDF prints, DWG and DXF files, and IGES and STEP solid models. When no formal drawing exists, we work from a photo of a hand sketch, and many of the parts we have shipped over the years started exactly that way.

Every RFQ is reviewed the same or next day, and we let you know promptly whether we will be quoting the job. When we quote, the price reflects the complete job. That includes the raw material, whether we source it or you supply it, and every outside process the drawing calls for, including heat treating, plating, balancing and surface finishing, coordinated through our vendors. It also includes our own CNC and manual machining time and a lead time we are confident we can meet. If the part is needed to get equipment back into service, tell us when you send the RFQ and we will schedule the work to match. Simple parts are typically quoted in less than a day. A large drawing package can take up to a week to review and quote accurately.

Once we receive your purchase order, we manage the job from start to finish. Parts are turned on our CNC lathes, vertical turret lathes and long-bed manual lathes. Milling and drilling are done on our Mori Seiki NTX2000 5-axis mill-turn. Gundrilling, bore honing and shaft grinding are all done in house, so your part stays under one roof. We machine 4140 HT, 15-5 PH and other stainless steels, Inconel 718, titanium and bronze, and we routinely hold tolerances under .001″. Every part is inspected against the print using a Keyence portable CMM, micrometers and bore gauges, and surface finish is checked on a profilometer. There is no minimum order quantity: we produce single replacement parts and spares as well as production runs in the thousands. Material certifications, dimensional inspection reports and first article inspection are provided on request. We will sign a non-disclosure agreement to protect your drawings and designs, and Zala Machine Co. is ITAR registered.

We price the material, sourced by us or supplied by you, and every outside process the print calls for: heat treating, plating, balancing and surface finishing.

We work out our CNC and manual machining time and the best lead time we can meet, including emergency scheduling when equipment is down.

Parts We Build to Print

Most of what leaves this shop is made to a customer’s drawing. The parts below are the ones we make most often, for OEMs building equipment and for plants keeping it running. Quantities run from a single replacement part to production runs in the thousands, and the same print gets the same part whether it is the first one or the four hundredth.

Shafts and rotating parts — Drive shafts, thrust shafts, rotor shafts, stepped and splined shafts, gear blanks and pinion blanks. Ground on every precision diameter and checked for runout before it ships.

Sleeves, bushings and bearing housings — Wear sleeves, bearing sleeves, split and solid housings, bored and line-bored to the fits on your print.

Dies and extrusion tooling — Blown film die bodies, spiral mandrels, distribution plates, breaker plates and die adapters, with flow channels polished to the finish the drawing calls for.

Adapters, flanges and melt pipes — Transition adapters, mounting flanges, heavy-wall melt pipes and elbows, gundrilled and honed, with bolt circles and sealing faces to print.

Housings, weldments and large fabrications — Pump and gearbox housings, machine frames, rolls and drums, and weldments that get welded and then machined in the same building.

Short-run and one-off work — Prototype parts, spares, and the awkward single pieces other shops turn down because the setup will not pay. There is no minimum order.

Contract machining for OEM parts is the steady work here — repeat jobs where we hold the setup, the material specification and the inspection record from one order to the next.

Contract and production machining for OEMs

A good share of our work is contract machining for equipment builders — the same part, to the same print, run again when the next batch is needed. Once a job has been through here we keep the setup, the tooling and the inspection method on file, so a repeat order is quoted and scheduled against work we have already proved out rather than treated as a new part.

Production machining runs here from one piece to several thousand. There is no minimum quantity. A first article goes out ahead of the run when the print calls for one, and material certifications and dimensional inspection reports come with the parts on request. We price the material, the outside services and the machining time in one quote, and we hold the schedule for all of it — including the operations that go to a vendor, such as heat treating, nitriding, plating and surface finishing.

We carry steel bar and plate in house, including 4140 round bar, so a drawing job does not have to wait on a mill order before it starts. Material can come from us or from you — some customers send their own stock in with the purchase order.

For an OEM adding a machine shop to its vendor list, the questions are usually the same: what fits, what tolerance, how fast, and what paperwork comes with the part. Our envelope and tolerances are in the capacity table above, quotes go out in under a day for a single part and up to a week for a large drawing package, and we are ITAR registered and sign NDAs before drawings change hands.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

No. We machine single replacement parts and spares as well as production runs in the thousands.

How quickly will I receive a quote?

Every RFQ is reviewed the same or next day. Simple parts are typically quoted in less than a day, and large drawing packages can take up to a week.

What drawing and CAD file formats do you accept?

PDF drawings, DWG and DXF files, IGES, and STEP or other solid models. When there is no formal drawing, a clear photo of a dimensioned hand sketch is often enough to quote from.

Can we supply our own material?

Yes. We can source the material for your parts or machine material that you supply.

What tolerances do you hold?

Tolerances under .001″ are standard work. Parts are inspected with a Keyence portable CMM, micrometers and bore gauges, and surface finish is checked on a profilometer.

Do you provide material certs and first article inspection?

Yes. Material certifications, dimensional inspection reports and first article inspection are provided on request.

What if we need the part urgently?

Tell us when you send the RFQ. We quote the best lead time we can meet and schedule urgent work around breakdowns and equipment that is out of service.
